Personally I don't think mounts would add much to GW unless they were part of some sort of mounted combat - something that GW actually has to some extent already ... i.e. The Junundu's in Nightfall, siege devourers etc.
In any case imagine being mounted while vanquishing in hard mode or in the underworld, it would be a serious nuisance since you'd just aggro everything and not last very long. Mounts are only really useful in games that don't have map travel so that you have to constantly cross the same areas to get where you want to go.
Note also that neither LOTRO or WoW allow mounts in instances and GW is entirely based on instances. If GW2 is less instanced, perhaps there will be mounts in the persistent areas, but I can't get too excited about the idea.
Mounts in other games are just there to make up for ridiculous travel times. Because of the way GW lets you map travel, mounts are extraneous and unnecessary. Speed buffs are rare and very limited in the game, including those that only work effectively outside of combat. Mounts would be just another novelty item competing for hard-to-come-by money with elite armor, minipets, etc.
Still there are parts on a map that take a long time to travel between that pressing M doesn't solve. Also not all mix of professions have skills for running fast. I have not seen speed travel skills for Necromancers as an example.
Other wise I can see also a mount being like a pet. Even mini pets seem useless right now. So I can't see mounts being any different. Though it would be hilarious to see a mini pet mount.
If we had mount like creatures they may come from some kind of stone. Then be temporary like the imp from bonus features.
In my view, in Guild Wars 1 there is almost no need of mounts anywhere, but in PvP the central map of Alliance Battles, that is a big map and one would like to ride fast to the capture points and also in PvE in Eye of the North one would like to have a mount to run fast to some dungeons entrances. Notice that in GW 1 PvE to show status -if that is what one wants- one has lots of gear. I do not think it silly that there are not mounts in GW1, because there is little need of them.
My experience with mounts is mainly in World of Warcraft. I was in a PvE server. I remember well that it was very fun to ride mounts in the PvP Battle Grounds particularly in Warsong Gulch and in Arathi Battle Grounds, as mounting, dismounting or riding mounts added excitement to the tactics and strategy to play. In Warsong Gulch the central zone of the map could be ride whilst the north and south buildings could not, what added some dynamism to what could be done with mounts or not. Nevertheless, in World of Warcraft PvE mounts rather than fun where a need to shorten the long journeys of traveling, and it was quite hard to get the gold needed to have a mount and then a faster mount. I do not know well other MMORPGs with mounts.
So, yes, I think that mounts might be a great addition to GW 2, mainly for PvP, but also for PvE.
I would love to see mounts in GW2. They would be useful in getting to new teleport locations, as well as shortening some of the 'nuisance' travel time - running back and forth between banks and crafting stations, for instance.
In my opinion, riding mounts and fast navigatioin from a point A to point B is compulsory in a MMO. The human kind has always used mounts to go everywhere, from horses to planes. Not having mounts in a game like this is no sense at all.
